ARCA Gold Training Awards Announced for 2018

The Asbestos Removal Contractors Association is pleased to announce the member companies who have gained a Gold Training Award 2017/2018.

The member companies achieved this award by training over eight operatives and/or supervisors with ARCA during the twelve-month period, and the candidates achieved an average score of 92.5% or above.

“I’m delighted to see 40 full contracting ARCA members gain the gold award this year,” commented Satish Patel, Training Manager for ARCA. “Member companies and their candidates have worked hard to achieve this award. All candidates achieving an average score of 92.5% (or above) is a superb achievement.”

These members are now able to use the ARCA Gold Training Award 2018 logo, which has been produced to recognise their achievement.

ARCA announce winners of Gold Site Audit Award 2018

More members gain award even with site audits unannounced

ARCA is delighted to announce the twenty-one member companies who have achieved the Gold Site Audit Award for 2018.

The award has been designed to acknowledge consistent performance, demonstrated over a sustained time period. So to achieve this award, Asbestos Removal Contractor members, needed to achieve Grades A-C, with an average of at least a Grade B, in six consecutive audits (that is across a 3-year period ending 30th June 2018).

Of the twenty-one companies achieving the award, ten have retained the award from last year, with eleven companies being newcomers.

“It is extremely positive to see an increase in the number of companies gaining this award compared to last year, especially as ARCA introduced completely unannounced audits in January 2017. Meaning our members had no idea where or when an ARCA auditor was going to assess their work,” said Geoff Silver the ARCA Membership Compliance Manager.

“Congratulations to all the winners. This award acknowledges the work that has been put into their participation in the ARCA Site Audit Accreditation Scheme (SAAS).”

HSE Construction Health Inspection Initiative

During October 2018 the HSE will be carrying out around 1,000 construction site inspections focusing on health issues, particularly asbestos and dust.

The HSE estimates that there are around 8,000 work-related cancer deaths a year. The construction industry accounts for around 3,500 of these, with asbestos and silica the major causes.

HSE inspectors will be looking to ensure those involved with construction projects know the risks. Work right and Go Home Healthy.

HSE has not Published POW Guidance

Contrary to claims made by other Trade Associations that the HSE has ‘published’ new guidance on Plans of Work, this is not the case.  The claim is in relation to the final draft of a piece of guidance that was given a limited circulation on the 25th September.

HSE has said that the plan is for the final draft to go to HSE’s Publications Governance Group this month (October) for permission to publish.  It will most likely be published as an Operational Circular (OC), this means it will be internal instructions and guidance for HSE to use to carry out its operational work of inspecting, investigating, permissioning and enforcing.  It will be transparent instructions to regulators.

HSE has said that it would be preferable if we didn’t distribute the guidance in its draft form to members, as in theory someone could still alter it or say there is no resource to publish. Until it goes through the complete permission process things remain uncertain, and HSE field inspectors cannot be fully briefed.  If/when approved, HSE will have to decide if and when they have the resource to publish.  HSE has said that if the permission process runs smoothly if should not be too long before publication.

ARCA has decided to ensure that the guidance is in its final form, that is, approved and published by HSE, before notifying our members, so in compliance with HSE’s wishes.
