ARCA presents at Asbestos Licensing Principal Inspectors conference

ARCA, the UK’s leading association representing asbestos removal contractors, was invited by the Health & Safety Executive to address the Asbestos Licensing Principal Inspectors’ 2015 conference.

ARCA is in regular communication with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) on various industry topics and guidance; however this invitation was an opportunity to directly address all of the Asbestos Licensing Principal Inspectors (ALPIs).

Colin Seditas, Technical and Development Manager, represented ARCA at the conference.

“Due to Colin’s previous experience of working for the asbestos regulator, he was in an ideal position to put ARCA members’ feedback of HSE’s inspections and assessments for regulating asbestos work across the country,” commented Steve Sadley, Chief Executive of ARCA.

“As an Association, representing the majority of UK-based asbestos removal contractors, this was a great opportunity to share some constructive feedback from the industry,” commented Colin.

“Under the presentation title of ‘To see ourselves as others see us’, the main topic raised was in relation to the consistency of inspections and approach to assessments across HSE regions. All agreed that standards should be consistent – basically businesses across the UK require a level playing field.”

“The feedback was received well and led to positive discussion. I believe that speaking at this conference was very valuable, both to the inspectors and the industry,” concluded Colin.

ARCA and HSE have also discussed industry initiatives such as ARMI’s Competency Guidance, ARCA’s Institute of Leadership and Management approved courses and the practical application of the Health & Safety Laboratory’s (HSL) air management research.

ARCA launch NVQ for Asbestos Operatives

NVQ qualification supports CSCS card application

After a successful pilot ARCA is pleased to announce the availability of the NVQ Level 2 Diploma for Asbestos Operatives. This recognised competency qualification is for individuals already working in or new to the asbestos removal industry, and supports a candidate’s application for a CSCS card.

To gain this ‘NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Removal of Hazardous Waste (Construction) – Licensed Asbestos’ there are two routes:

The On-Site Assessment and Training (OSAT) route is for operatives with over a years’ experience working in the asbestos removal industry. This route is ideal for individuals who want to continue in an operative role, require a CSCS card and have industry experience but no formal qualifications.

The Specialist Upskilling Programme (SUP) route is for operatives who require training (via Training Needs Analysis) prior to undertaking the competency assessments. Therefore, the SUP is ideal for those who are new to the industry or who are returning to the industry/operative role.

Employers who pay the CITB levy, and meet all CITB requirements, can apply for a grant for each candidate.

Information on the OSAT and SUP routes, fees and grants, along with some frequently asked questions, can be found on the ARCA web site.

Do you need a CSCS card? Gaining the NVQ Level 2 Diploma supports a candidate’s application for a blue skilled worker CSCS card. Also, once registered on the NVQ a candidate can apply for a Trainee or Experienced Worker red CSCS card, which will be valid for a year.
